How do I get PAK's so I can run OpenVMS and the layered products?
The process is as follows:
Join and receive a membership number from a participating Encompass, or DECUS, or recognized User Group world wide.
Use your WEBrowser and go to url http://www.openvmshobbyist.org/ make sure you have your personal user group membership number
to register as an OpenVMS Hobbyist.
Register as an OpenVMS Hobbyist. You will require a valid E-mail address to e-mail your license PAKs to (no paper licenses will be issued)
Over 100 OpenVMS and Layered Product Licenses will be sent to your E-mail address after you have registered.
Your OpenVMS License PAKS will expire 12 months after your registration and may not be shared with other Hobbyists or Institutions.
You may re-register if you PAKS expire and hobbyist PAKS will be issued to you for the next 12 months..
Each Hobbyist Machine must be registered and have their own PAKs to be eligible for this software grant. There is no limit to the number of
VAX, Alpha or Itanium systems that may be registered by an Individual for personal use.
I want to sell my Hobbyist System can I give the Licenses to another Hobbyist?
NO! Before giving/selling your Hobbyist System to someone else you must delete all your OpenVMS Hobbyist PAKS, they are not transferable.
The person who receives the system can have everything except the OpenVMS Hobbyist PAKS.
The new owner/Hobbyist must go through the process and obtain their own license PAKS for the system.
What systems can be licensed with the OpenVMS Hobbyist Program?
Any VAX, Alpha, or Itanium systems that can run OpenVMS are included in the Hobbyist License Grant for personal use.
Also, emulated systems such as Charon-VAX and SIMH are acceptable.
I want to develop commercial software using my OpenVMS Hobbyist system, can I do that?
No, the OpenVMS Hobbyist program is designed as an educational tool with non-commercial Terms and Conditions as part of its' license.

Why do the licenses expire in 1 year, and what happens after that?
This is a requirement of the Terms and Conditions of the OpenVMS Hobbyist License. All licenses provided under the OpenVMS Hobbyist Program expire within a year. However, when the licenses get close to expiring, simply come back and register for new PAKS for another year.
Can I use OpenVMS Hobbyist Licenses for School or Campus use?
No, the OpenVMS EDU License Program addresses OpenVMS and Layered Product Licenses for Schools and Colleges. They have different
Terms and Conditions that allows schools to use OpenVMS in research, administration, and in classrooms. If your local schools aren't using OpenVMS why
don't you introduce them to the best server available! And the OpenVMS EDU Program is also free!
How do I find out the CPU Serial Number for my system?
The CPU Serial Number can be found on the Digital sticker on the back of the CPU box.
If you are using an emulator, just use NONE for the serial number.
